Well, today is Thanksgiving and this is not the time to eat stuffing. What’s the difference between stuffing and dressing, you ask? Put plainly, if you cook it in the bird, it’s stuffing. If you cook it beside the bird, it’s dressing. And in the south, we do dressing!
On our menu today was turkey, dressing, yams, yellow cake with chocolate icing, coconut cake, sweet potato pie, peach and pepper fish, green beans, baked beans, macaroni and cheese and paella (from the neighbors.)
It’s Thanksgiving, so tell us about the best cook in your family.
My grandmother was the best cook in our family. When I was a newborn, she kept me for 3 months and really fattened me up! I remember the summers that she had my cousins and I and she loved to cook for us. One morning, she woke up around 4 am and made us all breakfast. She was in the mood to bake that day and proceeded to each of our favorite cakes…one for each of us, I think! There was red velvet, chocolate cake with chocolate icing, yellow cake with chocolate icing, yellow cake with vanilla icing, coconut cake…that I remember! Boy, the sugar coma that ensued that day! And she was a brave woman for giving it to us! She had to know her way around the kitchen because with a husband and 14 children to feed…and their children…you had to be ahead of the game.
My grandmother passed away when I was in the 9th grade. We moved back closer to help take care of my grandfather and all of the cooking responsibilities fell to my mom. She’s a twin so, of course, her sister couldn’t sit out on helping with everything. So now, the duties of being the family chef is passed between one person in two bodies…my mom and her twin sister; mon mere is in the foreground. They let their little sisters help every once in a while, but they wear the hats. Every holiday that requires food is going to happen with these 2 behind the scenes. They cook with love and laughter…and with no one else in the kitchen. Well, maybe me…I’m the daughter and goddaughter of course 🙂
Now to get ahold of my grandma’s sweet potato pie recipe…
