You’re still here! Awesome sauce!!
So, today is Day 4 of the #NaBloPoMo15 challenge and today’s question made me have to think…
When you were a kid, did you want to have the same job or a different job than your parents when you grew up?
My whole life has kind of revolved around the military and the government. My dad is retired from the Navy and my mom is retired from the government. Neither had careers that I was really interested in, and that’s not to say that they didn’t have awesome jobs! We got to travel the world with his and I’ve met half of the continental US through her. Seriously, my mother knows everyone.
Once I had traveled to (I think?) Wisconsin for a job and a couple of my mom’s friends from Mississippi walked in (from when I was in elementary school,) took one look at me and said “Aren’t you Linda’s daughter?” I was like woooow…and then I was glad that I wasn’t cutting a fool sideways in that restaurant…
But I digress.
I remember one conversation that I had with my dad. He asked if I was ever interested in joining the Navy. I’d thought about it, but with all of my health issues, I knew I couldn’t get in, so I let the thought pass. Also I’m lazy.
But I remember telling him that if I ever joined the Navy that I’d want to be a Navy SEAL. He was genuinely shocked! He was like, I don’t think you’d ever be able to do that. I don’t think you could ever hurt someone. I was like, you never know dad.
If you ever saw me go after a gnat or stalk a fly, you’d see the potential. Who would want to be a ninja when they grew up?
I grew up to be a martial arts instructor with a 3rd degree black belt. I’m just saying…
Did you follow in your parents’ footsteps with your career? Tell me in the comments below!
